Box Score Rolla, MO.- The Lewis University women's volleyball team picked up a win in three sets against the Missouri S&T Miners on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Flyers improved to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in conference while Missouri S&T is 2-14 overall and 0-5 in conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis took charge at the beginning of set one, putting two points on the board and kept the lead the entirety of the frame. The Flyers went on to rally up six consecutive points with help from three kills in a row from Ann-Kelly Velikov putting the score at 8-2. The Miners were never able to string along enough points and the set ended at 25-14.
Starting out hot, the Flyers put the first two points on the board again. Giving them an early advantage, the Miners tried to make a comeback when the match tied up at 4-4 with a kill from Elly Decker. Lewis was able to strike back and take the lead, never giving it up again. With
Marin Grossman's (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) two kills in a row, the Flyers put the match score at 21-14. Lewis sealed the set off a service ace by
Elena Gubera (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) ended the stanza at 25-18.
The Miners struck first in their third set with the first point. Both teams traded points during the set and wasn't until the tie at 21-21 that Lewis pulled through. A kill from
Ella Skogman (Waukesha, Wis/Waukesha West) helped the Flyers gain the advantage at 22-21 and
Emma O'Neill (Papillion, Neb./Papillion La Vista South) secured the game winning kill ending the set at 25-22.
Ann-Kelly Velikov led the Flyers with 15 kills and
Lily King (Channahon, Ill./Kent State) had a total of 23 assists.
Mary Zielinski (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) topped off 22 digs. Lewis ended the match with a hitting percentage of .250 (
49-11-152).
Addie Schoenberger led the Miners with 11 kills and Elise Mehaffy had a total of 18 assists. Elly Decker topped off 18 digs. Missouri S&T ended the march with a hitting percentage of .122 (
36-18-148).
MATCH NOTES:
- Lewis managed 3 service aces compared to the Miners with none.
- The Flyers had over double the number of total blocks during the match.
- Lily King (Channahon, Ill./Kent State) has had over 20 kills the past two games
