Romeoville, Ill. - A Mikey Revell (Largo, Maryland/Bishop McNamara) penalty kick in the final 14 seconds of Friday's contest allowed the Lewis men's soccer team to draw against the undefeated Lincoln.
The Lewis Flyers are now 3-4-6 overall with a 2-4-3 conference record while Lincoln becomes 7-0-4 and 5-0-4 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis came into Friday's match with a high level of intensity. The Flyers did a good job keeping the ball in their offensive half and controlling the midfield with the two six footers Robert Gorodnickis (Riga, Latvia/Riga) and Hampus Ryno (Kungsbacka, Sweden/Aranäsgymnasiet). Lewis took a healthy diet of shots in the first half with Lance Somerfield (Orland Park, Ill./Eastern Illinois) taking a few from outside the box. Near the end of the half Mario Ramirez (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) kicked a frozen rope to the upper section of the goal, the shot was saved by the Blue Tigers keeper, and the half ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
The second half started the same with Lewis fighting for possessions in the midfield. The first goal of the game came off the foot of Santiago Brisco for Lincoln to make it 1-0. The Flyers came inches away from tying the game when Ramirez took a shot off a rebound that went in, but the side judge ruled the play offside, calling the goal back. With the clock winding down and seconds remaining in the match, the Flyers were awarded a penalty kick with 14 seconds remaining. Mikey Revell (Largo, Maryland/Bishop McNamara) would step up to the dot and save Lewis from the loss. The clock would then run out with a final score of 1-1.
Both goalies played a full 90 minutes with Jeremiah Higgins (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) earning his first start of the season for the Flyers where he finished with one goal allowed. While Vincent Osei for the Blue Tigers ended the match with four saves and one goal allowed.
