Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University men's soccer team dropped a close contest Friday night as they fell 1-0 at home to the Rockhurst Hawks at Lewis Stadium.
With the win, Rockhurst improved to 5-2-2 (4-0-2 GLVC) while Lewis moved to 3-2-4 (2-2-1 GLVC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rockhurst struck early when Immanuel Wayoro broke free and found the back of the net just 4:12 into the match, giving the Hawks a quick 1-0 lead that would ultimately stand as the game-winner.
The Flyers generating several scoring chances throughout the first half with Noah Kawaguchi (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) sending a shot over the crossbar. Kawaguchi again tested the Hawks' keeper in the 27th minute, forcing the only save of the night from Rockhurst's keeper. Still, Lewis entered halftime trailing by one despite holding a 6-2 edge in shots and a 7-3 lead in corners in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Flyers continued to apply pressure and nearly tied the match as Mario Ramirez (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) fired a shot just wide in the 75th minute. Despite 10 corner kicks in the second half and the Flyers back line limiting the Hawks to just one shot in the second half, Lewis was unable to find the net and fell 1-0 to Rockhurst
Freshman goalkeeper Yoan Zagorov (Sofia, Bulgaria), made two saves in net for the Flyers. As a team, Lewis outshot Rockhurst 11-3 and earned 16 corner kicks to the Hawks' four.
GAME NOTES
- The Flyers held a commanding 16-4 advantage in corner kicks and an 11-3 edge in total shots.
- Despite the loss, Lewis allowed just one goal for the fourth time in five games.
- This was Lewis' first loss at home this season
- Kawaguchi attempted a season-high three shots against the Hawks.
