SET BREAKDOWN
SET 1: Purdue Fort Wayne started the match on a 5-2 run early in set one with a block by Melendez Watts and Lipscomb.
Piotr Wymoczyl (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove HS) for Lewis took advantage of three Purdue Fort Wayne attacking errors later on to have a three point unanswered run to bring the Flyers within one at 9-8.
Sitting at match point for the Mastodons, Lewis used a service error and kill by Roquet to get to twenty three points in the set but soon lost to a Purdue Fort Wayne kill by Melendez Watts to make the final score of the set 25-23.
SET 2: Both teams began runs of their own to open set two with the Mastodons starting the set 4-1 and Lewis tying it at 4-4 with a three-point run of their own. Midway through the set Purdue Fort Wayne put themselves out front with a three-point run to put them up 15-12, the Flyers quickly returned with a four-point run to retake the lead at 16-15.
The finish line went back and forth between both teams with each side returning with a multi-point run late, a four-point run put Purdue Fort Wayne up 21-19 while another Lewis four-point run put them back up at match point, 24-23.
The final run of the set went to the Mastodons as they ended set 2 with a 3 point run highlighted with a service ace by Muir to make the final score 27-25.
SET 3: Lewis looked to grab a set in the series by starting strong in the third set with a kill by Baggs putting the Flyers up big 12-6. A kill later on the set by Oguz began a three-point unanswered run for the Flyers which pushed the score to 16-9.
The Mastodons were unable to get much offense started as the third set came to a close with the Flyers taking it firmly at 25-16.
SET 4: The Flyers found their rhythm early on the same way they did in set three with a substantial five-point unanswered run to increase their lead to five with the score at 11-6.
That run ended up not comparing to the massive seven point unanswered run again by Lewis soon after which left Purdue Fort Wayne with a 13 point deficit, the set ultimately went to the Flyers with the final score being 25-10.
SET 5: Both teams began the final set side by side with a kill by Roquet to get Lewis on the board while kills by both Muir and Melendez Watts opened the scoring for the Mastodons at 2-2.
The Flyers pulled out in front towards the end of set five with a three-point run with a Purdue Fort Wayne service error and back-to-back aces by Todorov to up the score to 11-5.
A 4-1 Lewis run completed the reverse sweep for the Flyers as an ace by
Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) and a final kill by Roquet ended the match at 15-7.
