#15 Lewis Men's Volleyball Defeats Queens Saturday; Honors Five Seniors Before Match

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The No. 15 Lewis University men's volleyball team defeated Queens 3-2 Saturday (March 29).
 
Before the game, Lewis honored its five seniors. Nathan DeGraaf (Cranberry Township, Penn./Seneca Valley HS). Wesley Yusk (Casselberry, Fla./Lake Howell), Ryan Collins (Dublin, Calif./Valley Christian), Tyler Morgan (Dike, Iowa/Dike-New Hartford), Max Roquet (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) were all honored for all their contributions to Lewis Men's Volleyball.

SET BREAKDOWN
SET 1: Queens 25, Lewis 21
Both teams scored five points each to begin the match. Queens responded with three straight points for an 8-5 advantage.
 
Lewis got back in the set after a block from Morgan and Baggs then an ace from Morgan made it 9-8 Queens. The Royals extended their lead to 15-11 before the Flyers got back-to-back points off kills from Yusk and Roquet. 
 
Queens got the next point before Lewis scored the following three to tie it at 16-16. The Royals went back on top 20-19 then went on to score four straight to force set point. 
 
The Flyers scored the next two including a kill from Morgan, making it 24-21. QU scored the next point to win the set.
 
SET 2: Lewis 25, Queens 17
Lewis started the second set ahead 6-3 in the early stages. Queens responded with six unanswered points, putting the Royals up 9-6. 
 
The Flyers bounced back with six straight of their own after a timeout including blocks from Roquet, Baggs and Oguz. Queens picked up back-to-back points to make it a one-point game at 12-11. 
 
Baggs Jr. and Oguz got back-to-back kills for a 14-11 lead for the Flyers. Queens responded with a pair of points.
 
Lewis responded then the set became all Flyers. Oguz and Roquet recorded kills then a block from Morgan, Baggs made it set point for Lewis. 
 
Queens responded with the next point then the Flyers won the set after taking the next point. 
 
SET 3: Lewis 25, Queens 18
Lewis jumped out to a 5-1 lead after Oguz, Roquet and Baggs recorded kills. Queens got the next point then the Flyers scored three straight points capped off by a kill from Baggs Jr. making it 8-2.
 
Queens bounced back and made it a three-point set at 13-10. Lewis got back on track and went ahead 22-14 after an ace from Cameron Hoying (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales).
 
The Royals made it as close as 24-18 after Lewis forced set point. Cole Sweitzer (Middleton, Wis./Middleton HS) won it for the Flyers after securing the kill, giving Lewis a 2-1 lead. 
 
SET 4: Queens 26, Lewis 24
Lewis jumped out to an early 12-9 lead after an ace from Tyler Walenga (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East). Queens responded with four straight points, granting the Royals a 13-12 lead. 
 
The Flyers recorded the next point before Queens went on a 7-2 run for a 20-15 advantage. Lewis fought back in the set after three straight points, making it 20-18. 
 
Queens forced set point after reaching 24-20 later on. Lewis responded with four straight points, capped off by a kill by Roquet. 
 
The Royals answered with two in a row, securing a 26-24 set victory. 
 
SET 5: Lewis 15, Queens 12
Queens took an early 5-1 lead in the winner-take-all set. Moments later, Queens made it 8-5 as both teams switched sides. 
 
Lewis responded with four straight points, all of which were kills. Three came from Roquet and one from Baggs, for a 9-8 lead. Queens got the next point to tie it 9-9. 
 
The Flyers scored four straight points, giving them a 13-9 advantage. The Royals narrowed the gap as close as 14-12 but Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) won the match for the Flyers with a kill. 
 
FINAL SCORE: Lewis 3, Queens 2

Lewis will be back in action Thursday, April 3 as the Flyers travel to Purdue Fort Wayne to take on the Mastodons starting at 6 p.m. CT.
