#14 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Defeats #17 Ball State in MIVA Quarters Saturday

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The No. 14 and fourth seed Lewis University men's volleyball team defeated No. 17 and fifth seeded Ball State in five sets 3-2 Saturday (April 19).

SET BREAKDOWN
SET 1: Lewis 25, Ball State 20
Lewis scored the first three points of the contest after Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) started it off with a kill. Ball State scored the next point before the Flyers added three more in a row to make it 6-1.
 
The Cardinals recorded back-to-back points to narrow it 6-3. Lewis quickly responded and scored three straight making it 9-3 Flyers.
 
The Flyers maintained control of the set and went up 19-11 after a kill from Roquet. Ball State responded with two consecutive points, cutting it to 19-13.
 
Ball State made it as close as 20-16 after three consecutive points but Lewis was able to close it out. The Flyers recorded the last two points of the set to win it 25-20.

SET 2: Ball State 25, Lewis 16
Ball State scored the first two points of the set for an early 2-0 lead. Lewis responded and made it 3-2. 
 
Lewis cut it down to 12-11 after scoring the next point. The Cardinals scored six straight points for a commanding 18-11 lead in the set.
 
Roquet attempted to get the Flyers back in the set with a kill, bringing the score to 18-12. The Cardinals controlled the rest of the set, outscoring Lewis 7-4 to win the it, 25-16.
 
SET 3: Lewis 25, Ball State 18
Both teams each scored three points to begin the third set, making it 3-3 early. Lewis responded with four straight points including kills from Wymoczyl and a pair by Roquet to make it 7-3. 
 
Ball State countered with three straight points bringing it within one point at 7-6. Both teams traded points before Lewis scored six straight points, making it 15-7 in favor of the Flyers. 
 
The Cardinals recorded back-to-back points to cut it down to six (15-9) but Lewis maintained the upper hand throughout the set. Lewis won the set 25-18 after a kill from Baggs Jr. 
 
SET 4: Ball State 25, Lewis 20
Ball State jumped out to an early 3-1 lead before Lewis scored back-to-back points to tie it at 3-3. Ball State responded with a 4-1 run grabbing a 8-4 lead.  
 
The Flyers looked to get back on track after a kill from Oguz but Ball State regained momentum and went up 15-8 after a pair of kills. Lewis cut the deficit to 17-11 after a block from Baggs, Haber and Oguz but the Cardinals proceeded to score three consecutive points, making it 20-11.
 
Lewis made another push late in the set making scoring three consecutive points, narrowing it to 24-20. The Cardinals won the set after recording the next point to force a winner-take-all fifth set.
 
SET 5: Lewis 15, Ball State 11
Both teams each scored three points to begin the winner-take-all set. Ball State then scored the next two points for a 5-3 advantage. 
 
Lewis went on a 5-2 run before both teams switched sides with the Flyers leading 8-7. The Flyers scored three more points afterward for a 11-7 advantage. 
 
Ball State made it as close as 12-9 but the Flyers recorded back-to-back points off kills from Oguz increasing it to 14-9. The Cardinals scored the next two points then Haber closed out the match with a kill to win it 15-11.
 
FINAL SCORE: Lewis 3, Ball State 2

Lewis will be back in action for the MIVA Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday, April 23 at top-seeded Loyola Chicago starting at 7 p.m. CT.
