INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Great Lakess Valley Conference announced Friday (June 27) that Lewis University student-athletes
Mikey Kocen (Beach Park, Ill./UNC-Pembroke),
Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West),
Savanna Jourdan (Oswego, ILL./Oswego),
Domenic Tarello (Libertyville, Illinois/Libertyville HS) and
Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, IL/Harry D. Jacobs High School) were named Winter/Spring Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their respective sports. The five winners were the most in the conference.
MIKEY KOCEN, BASEBALL
Kocen was the GLVC Player of the Year and was First Team All-GLVC. He led the league in slugging percentage (.825) and on-base plus slugging percentage (1.319), while ranking second in batting average (.407), home runs (19), RBI (63) and total bases (160). He helped lead the Flyers to the GLVC Regular Season title and first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013.
The Business Management major was named the Midwest Region Player of the Year by the Division II Conference Commissioners' Association (D2CCA), ABCA and NCBWA. He earned First Team All-America from American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Second Team All-America from National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA).
In the classroom he has a 3.67 cumulative GPA and earned Academic All-GLVC, GLVC Council of Presidents Academic Excellence Award, the Delahanty Award and was CSC Academic All-District.
TAYLOR GUGLIUZZA, WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Gugliuzza was the GLVC Player of the Year and was named to the All-GLVC First Team. She was named Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-America Honorable Mention and earned D2CCA Midwest Region First Team honors. She finished fourth in conference for points per game (16.4), fifth in minutes per game (33.1) and seventh in field goal percentage (.473). She led Flyers to 19-1 league record, second-straight GLVC Regular Season title, and NCAA Tournament berth.
The Criminal Justice major had a 3.75 GPA this year and a 3.76 cumulative GPA. She earned Academic All-GLVC, the GLVC Council of Presidents' Academic Excellence Award and was CSC Academic All-District. She was also a Delahanty Award winner.
SAVANNA JOURDAN, WOMEN'S BOWLING
Jourdan earned All-GLVC Honorable Mention this past spring. She recorded percentages of 39.9 (strike), 80.5 (makeable spares) and 87.8 (single-pin spares) en route to averaging 18.81 pins per frame. She anchored the team's lineup in baker play at the GLVC Tournament, posting a 50.0 strike percentage, 90.0 single-pin spare percentage, and 18.54 pins per frame.
The Business Administration major finished her final semester with a 4.0 GPA, and a 3.9 GPA for the year. She earned Academic All-GLVC, the GLVC Council of Presidents' Academic Excellence Award, and CSC Academic All-District honors. She was also a Delahanty Award winner.
DOMENIC TARELLO, MEN'S LACROSSE
Tarello was named to USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America Third Team, was named GLVC Specialist of the Year and First Team All-GLVC. He finished tied for the top spot in the GLVC for faceoff wins (160), along with placing second in ground balls (79) and faceoff percentage (.627). He finished 16th in DII for faceoff percentage and 21st in faceoff wins. He helped the Flyers earn the No. 3 seed in the GLVC Tournament and their third straight appearance in the title game. He earned GLVC Defensive Player of the Week honors three times.
The Sport Management major achieved a 3.88 semester GPA to land on Lewis' Dean's List, holding a 3.85 cumulative mark. He collected several academic honors including Academic All-GLVC, the GLVC Council of Presidents' Academic Excellence Award, the Delahanty Award and CSC Academic All-District.
DELANEY GARDEN, SOFTBALL
Garden was named First Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and D2CCA, along with being voted GLVC Player and Pitcher of the Year and D2CCA Midwest Region Player of the Year. She led the GLVC in batting average (.466), runs scored (62), hits (96), triples (6), ERA (1.55) and opponent batting average (.199). She finished second in innings pitched (202.2) and complete games (25), as well as third in strikeouts (237). She helped lead the Flyers to the GLVC Regular Season crown and a NCAA Tournament appearance. She was a three-time GLVC Pitcher of the Week selection this year.
The Spanish Language and Culture major achieved a 3.93 semester GPA and a 3.80 cumulative mark. She was named CSC Academic All-District, Academic All-GLVC, earned the Delahanty Award and the GLVC Council of Presidents' Academic Excellence Award.
