No. 9 Men's Volleyball Shocked by No. 11 UC San Diego

Romeoville, Ill. – In another battle of top-15 teams for the No. 9 Lewis University men's volleyball team, the Flyers found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-2 loss to No. 11 UC San Diego Friday night at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers slipped to 5-3 on the season, while the Tritons improved to 4-3.

IMPACT PLAYERS
Daniel Haber (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) led Lewis with a career-high 18 kills while Cameron Hoying (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) chipped in 11 of his own along with a team-best nine digs. Diego Estrada (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Adianez) tallied 31 assists while as a team, Lewis hit at a clip of .293 (54-20-116) compared to .227 (49-22-119) for UCSD.

Luke Chandler (17) and Sebastiano Sani (14) combined for 31 kills while John Luers amassed 32 assists and seven digs in the win

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis opened the match in strong fashion as they hit above .300 in the opening set and used a late push in the second to grab a 2-0 lead, highlighted by a late 3-1 spurt in set two.

The Tritons answered in the third set, pulling away late to claim a 25-23 decision before evening the match in the fourth. In a tightly contested final frame, Lewis found themselves down one, 5-4, before a short 3-0 pushed them ahead, 7-5. Still, the Tritons had an answer as an untimely service error from the red and white spurned a 6-2 run that gave UCSD the lead for good, 11-9

Despite Lewis trimming the lead down to one, 12-11, after a Hoying kill, the Tritons tallied three of the final four points of the match to escape Romeoville with a 15-12 set five win and pull off the reverse sweep.
