Westfield, Ind. -- The Lewis University baseball team ended their back-to-back doubleheader opening to the season Saturday (Feb. 14) at the Grand Park Sports Complex. The Flyers ended the weekend with a 1-3 overall record.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Flyers began their second matchup versus the Cardinals on the season and first for the day by allowing four runs on three hits in the top of the first. This stemming from an RBI double from Ryan Jarvis and soon coming around to score on the same play from a Lewis error. Connor Cornwell for the Cardinals knocked in another on a single and scored himself on a wild pitch to put the Cardinals up comfortably at a 4-0 score.
Two Lewis hits in a row in the bottom half of the first allowed junior Jackson Hunley (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) to score from third after junior Alex Chaltlin grounded into a double play to collect the RBI for the Flyers to decrease the deficit to 4-1.
Saginaw Valley State bounced back immediately in the top of the second inning when Ethan Scheib stole home on more clever baserunning from the Cardinals and Jacob Pitt put another run on the board with a single to go up 6-1.
The Cardinals weren't done adding on for the game as they added four more insurance runs to make it 10-1 after Chase Miller hit an infield single, Lewis balked, and Scheib laced a two run double.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Flyers got a couple back as freshman Jimmy Spellman (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame College of Prep) singled to right for an RBI followed by Chaltlin matching Spellman with another RBI single to make the Saginaw Valley State lead 10-3.
Buck Snabes brought in two more Cardinal runs in the top of the sixth on a single while Jarvis hit a two run single himself which capped off the 14-3 commanding win over the Flyers in the contest.
For Saginaw Valley State, pitcher and infielder Jack Sequin took control on the mound and picked up the win almost going the whole way, giving up just three earned runs through six total innings of work.
GAME TWO RECAP
Lewis got things started in the scoring column when senior John Henry Russell (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) led off the top of the second inning with a walk which paved the way for junior Kyle Peterson (Orland Park, Ill/Carl Sandburg) to pick up an RBI on a groundout, while Hunley tripled to right field for two more runs to extend the early Lewis lead to 3-0.
The offense was quiet for both teams until the top of the fourth where Hunley added insurance on a sacrifice fly to bring in the fourth run of the game to make it 4-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Yellow Jackets produced a dominating six total runs on four hits and a Flyer error on defense. Cedarville batted around in the fifth inning with Grayson Weikel leading the inning off with a walk, and then later walking again to bring in the Yellow Jackets sixth run to make it 6-4.
That would mark the final score as the Flyers couldn't get it going after the fourth inning as Cedarville's relief pitching shut the door in the second half of the game allowing five walks but only giving up one run.
