Romeoville, Ill. - A two RBI single from Brayton Bowen in the top of the fifth gave UIndy the lead for good as they cameback to defeat the Lewis University baseball team, 8-4, Thursday afternoon at Brennan Field.
With the win, the Greyhounds improved to 28-19 (10-3 GLVC) while the Flyers moved to 21-25 (13-14 GLVC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Flyers struck first in the bottom of the opening frame as
Alex Chaltin (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring home Constantine Coins.
John Henry Russell (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) reached on a fielders choice to bring home a run and a
Jackson Hunley (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) RBI double saw Lewis add to its lead and make it a 3-0 ballgame.
After keeping UIndy scoreless for the first four innings of the contest, the Greyhounds fought back as a Carter Thomas single drove in their first run of the day to get the visitors on the board. After a Bret Perry RBI single cut the Lewis lead down to one, Bowen connected on the fourth pitch of his at bat and sent a ball into the outfield that brought home two runs and gave the Greyhounds the lead for good, 4-3.
In the top of the seventh, Bowen again was the hero for UIndy as with the bases loaded, he sent a ball over the right field wall for a grand slam, making it an 8-3 game.
Lewis added a run in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a Coins sac fly. Still, the Flyers were held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth as UIndy secured the series-opening win.
Aidan Pearson earned the win, going 5.0 innings, allowing three hits and earning all three runs put against him.
Jackson Bruno (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame Prep) was charged with the loss, going 4.2 frames, giving up nine hits, four runs and two strike outs.
