AURORA, Ill. – After dropping the opening set, No. 21 Lewis women's volleyball rallied for a 21-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 victory over Ashland on Friday evening in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover. The tournament features every team from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The opening set loss came on the heels of a loss to No. 11 Ferris State to start the day.
“This is a tough two days both mentally and physically,” Lewis head coach
Lorelee Smith said. “I thought it was important the team showed they had the fight in them to bounce back when things didn't start our way.”
Lewis had a 15-9 lead in the first frame only to see Ashland go on a 7-0 run. Ashland's Kathy Fletcher had two of her five aces in the match during the run.
The second set only had one lead change as the Flyers won easily. The third set however was a tight one with eight ties and four lead changes. The Flyers took the set by scoring the final two points of the frame after the score was tied at 23.
Each team had five runs of two points or more in the fourth set. The Flyers took control with a 5-0 run midway through the set. Junior
Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) had a kill for point 25.
Krumwiede finished with a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs. Junior
Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) added a career-high 19 digs and 10 kills. Senior
Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) had a double-double of a career-high 16 digs and 10 kills.
Redshirt sophomore setter
Vivian Pritz (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township/Edinboro) saw time in both the third and fourth sets. She finished with 13 assists.
“The combination of Viv and Leigh (Barea) puts us in an advantage by having two equally talented setters,” Smith said. “If one plays tight or the opponent gets a feel for one we can make the switch and not lose ground.”
The Flyers held a 10-1 edge in blocks. Senior
Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) had a match-high 15 kills with five block assists.
Friday's match was the first time since the 2007 NCAA Tournament that Ashland and Lewis have played.
Ashland falls to 9-8 while Lewis improves to 14-5. The Flyers close the Crossover with a match against Grand Valley State on Saturday.
