Lewis Men's Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak To Four With 3-0 Blanking Of William Jewell

Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University sophomore Cristhian Ramirez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling/Emerald Coast United Academy) scored two first-half goals to help push the host Flyers to a 3-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over William Jewell, snapping the Cardinals' five-game winning streak and extending their unbeaten streak to four games, at Lewis Stadium on Sunday (Oct. 16) afternoon.

"It's always good to get a win late in the year, so today was crucial," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "We're battling to get position in the conference and to make the conference tournament.

"So today's win was important."

With the victory, Lewis improves to 7-6-1 overall and 7-4-1 in GLVC action, while the Cardinals are now 9-6 on the season and 7-5 in conference play.

Ramirez put the Flyers on the board right away, as he converted a one-timer past Cardinals' goalkeeper Justin Schmidt at the 5:23 mark. Freshmen David Pyle (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) and George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) assisted on the play.

The Wheeling, Ill., native found the back of the net again in the 32nd minute, as he sprinted down the middle of the field and scored an unassisted tally to extend the Flyers advantage to 2-0 heading into halftime.

The Flyers put the game out of reach in the second half, as senior Robens Decius (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades) (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades/East Central College) scored his third goal of the season in the 60th minute. Junior midfielder Lazaro Gil (Miami, Fla./) (Miami, Fla./Garden City C.C.) assisted on the play.

Lewis goalkeeper Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence ) (Mokena, Ill./Providence) made eight stops in goal for his second shutout of the season.

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Oct. 21), as the Flyers head to Rolla, Missouri to square off with Missouri S&T for a 7:30 p.m. (CST) first kick.
