ST. LOUIS – Senior
Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) hit .846 with 11 kills on 13 swings with no errors to help No. 21 Lewis women's volleyball to a 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday afternoon.
Koeneman was one of three Flyers to finish with double-digit kills. Junior
Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) hit at a .524 clip for 12 kills on 21 swings with just one error. Junior
Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) added 11 kills. Senior
Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) added seven kills and seven block assists.
The Flyers out-hit the Tritons .442 to .119. Freshman setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) averaged exactly 12 assists per set by recording 36 for the match.
“Leigh spread it out well but it was also the hitters taking advantage when they got a set and putting it away,” head coach
Lorelee Smith said. “We had a few areas we wanted to attack in their defense that weren't our hitters' normal spots and we were able to do that.”
Lewis limited the Tirtons to sub .100 hitting in each of the first two sets. The Flyers closed the opening set on a 9-2 run. A 6-0 stretch allowed Lewis to open an early lead in the second set. UMSL rallied to make it a 22-21 game, before the Flyers scored the final three points of the frame. Mount had a block assist and a kill for the game's final two points. The Flyers won the third set on the back of a pair of 5-0 runs.
“When they made a push we didn't let that change us,” Smith said. “We responded by earning a point with a good play rather than waiting for them to make an error.”
The victory is Lewis' fifth straight. The Flyers have dropped just one set in the streak.
“As the match went on we served more aggressive,” Smith said. “Not just serving hard, but serving aggressive short and I think against an offensive team like UMSL you need to serve aggressive.”
The Tritons fall to 10-5 (6-3 GLVC). Lewis improves to 10-4 (6-3 GLVC). The Flyers' next contest is on Wednesday against Wayne State. The match will be played at Mishawaka High School in Mishawaka, Ind. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT.
