Women's Volleyball Concludes Day One of Midwest Crossover

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAMMOND, Ind. - The Lewis women's volleyball team fell to Northern Michigan and Ashland on day one of the Midwest Crossover.

The Flyers fell to the Wildcats, 3-1, and to the Eagles, 3-0. After one day of action, Lewis' record moved to 11-10 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED (VS NORTHERN MICHIGAN)
Down 1-0 after dropping the first set 25-16, the Flyers found themselves tied at 5-5 following a Caroline Impey (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) kill. Lewis took flight on the next point when a kill by Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin) sparked an 8-2 run that vaulted the Flyers ahead 13-7. Lewis never looked back, limiting NMU to a -.029 hitting percentage (7-8-34) while using multiple scoring runs of its own to win 25-16 and even the match at one set apiece.

The Wildcats struck first in the third set, claiming 10 of the frame's first 15 points. The teams traded scores through the middle of the set, with NMU keeping Lewis at bay. However, a late 5-1 run, sparked by a Newberry kill, helped Lewis cut the Wildcats' lead to three at 22-19. Despite the late push, NMU won three of the next four points to thwart the comeback and win 25-20, taking a 2-1 match lead.

With the fourth set tied 16-16, the Wildcats pulled away after an Allie Barlow kill sparked a 6-2 run that gave NMU a 22-18 cushion. The teams traded the final five points, with the Wildcats securing a 25-20 fourth-set victory and a 3-1 match win.

Laynie Russell led NMU with 13 kills, while Barlow recorded a match-high 46 assists. Lauren Cardwell added 14 digs, and Anna O'Keefe tallied five total blocks, including three solo blocks and two block assists.

Newberry paced the Flyers with 14 kills, while Marin Grossman (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) and Impey added 12 apiece. In her first start of the 2026 season, Kaileigh Krawiec (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) recorded a team-high 36 assists. Elena Gubera (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) totaled 16 digs, while Newberry tallied five total blocks, including a match-high four solo blocks. Despite the loss, Lewis posted a .304 hitting percentage (53-15-125), compared with NMU's .270 (55-18-137).

HOW IT HAPPENED (VS ASHLAND)
Lewis struck first in its second match of the day, as the Flyers tallied nine of the first 12 points. However, Ashland began to chip away at Lewis' lead, and an uninterrupted 5-0 run, sparked by a Myia Etzler kill, turned the tables and vaulted the Eagles ahead, 12-11.

The teams traded points through the middle of the set, but the Red and White gained breathing room after an Impey kill sparked a 4-1 run that gave Lewis an 18-16 lead. Ashland responded with a 4-0 run of its own to take the lead for good at 20-18. The Eagles never relinquished their advantage, taking the first set, 25-21, to claim a 1-0 match lead.

Trailing 14-13 in a tightly contested second set, the Flyers regained the lead as an Impey kill sparked a 3-0 run that gave Lewis a 16-14 advantage. Once again, the Eagles responded as a Haley Belo kill sparked a 5-1 run that put Ashland up 19-17. Lewis answered again, tying the set at 19-19 on consecutive Ashland attack errors. However, an untimely service error by Lewis sparked a set-clinching 6-1 run for Ashland, which claimed the second set, 25-20, and took a 2-0 match lead.

Ashland posted a .414 hitting percentage (15 kills, three errors, 29 attempts) in the third set, winning 25-17 to complete the sweep.

Mya Etzler led the Eagles with 11 kills, while Kylee Urban recorded 30 assists. Abbey Queen finished with 16 digs in the winning effort.

Newberry again led the Flyers with 15 kills, while Krawiec recorded 25 assists. Defensively, Gubera finished with 11 digs, and Hannah Dietzenbach (Fall River, Wis./Fall River) led Lewis with two block assists.
