SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A penalty kick goal by Drury's Hillary Cockrell gave the Panthers a 2-1 double overtime victory over Lewis women's soccer on Sunday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game.
Lewis sophomore
Heidi Haller (Northville, Mich./Northville) (Northville, Mich./Northville) scored with 2:46 remaining in regulation to force overtime. The goal was assisted by juniors
Jenny Hyde (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake) (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake) and
Shelley Hadlock (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). The tally was Haller's first career goal. She scored it from four yards out.
Drury scored the first goal of the game at 39:06 on a shot by Nicole Williams. Cockrell assisted on the goal which came from five yards out. Drury held the 1-0 lead until Haller's goal late in the second half.
Following a scoreless initial overtime session, Cockrell scored the penalty kick in the third minute of double overtime.
It is Lewis' second overtime 2-1 loss in as many games. The Flyers are now 0-4-1 in overtime games this season. Of Lewis' seven GLVC losses this season, six have been by one goal.
“We played with a lot of heart and unfortunately this is one of the most difficult ways to lose a game,” head coach
Chris Koenig said. “There isn't one thing I can put my finger on why we have had these results in overtime. It's a game that could have gone the other way and we just didn't get the break.”
Drury improves to 8-8-1 (5-8-1 GLVC). Lewis falls to 6-8-1 (6-7-1 GLVC). The Flyers finish the regular season on Wednesday with a home contest against UW-Parkside. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
The final spot in the 2011 GLVC Tournament is still up for grabs between Lewis and Missouri-St. Louis. However the Flyers need some help from Maryville against Missouri-St. Louis on Wednesday. A Lewis victory over UW-Parkside combined with a Missouri-St. Louis loss or tie to Maryville gives Lewis the final spot. A Lewis tie combined with a Missouri-St. Louis loss also gives the Flyers the final spot. In those scenarios when Lewis and Missouri-St. Louis finish with an identical win-percentage the Flyers win the head-to-head tiebreaker thanks to a Sept. 25 victory over the Tirtons earlier this season.
