MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Lewis women's volleyball head coach
Lorelee Smith brought her 21
st ranked Flyers to her hometown of Mishawaka, Ind. to play Wayne State on Wednesday evening in a neutral site contest. The Flyers made it a homecoming to remember as Lewis defeated the Warriors 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 on Smith's former court of Mishawaka High School.
"It was surreal to coach in my former gym,” Smith said. “There is so much history in the gym and my family has so much pride with the high school. I was touched when the team told me before the game it was a goal of theirs to play well in my old gym."
The Flyers won the non-conference tilt thanks to a .314 to .135 hitting percentage edge.
Senior
Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) led Lewis with 10 kills. She also added five blocks (one solo). Senior
Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) hit .412 with nine kills and three blocks (one solo).
Lewis held a 55-46 edge in digs and 8-4 advantage in blocks. Sophomore
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) led Lewis with 16 digs.
"We blocked really well which was big because they have some huge swingers," Smith said. “We also had good back row defense which was big.”
The match featured 10 ties and seven lead changes. Five of the ties and five of the lead changes came in the third set. Lewis led 22-20 before the Flyers scored the final three points of the set to win the match.
Wayne State falls to 6-8. Lewis improves to 11-4. The Flyers host UIS on Saturday at 5 p.m.
