RENSSELAER, Ind. - The Lewis women's soccer team earned their second Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season on Friday evening with a 2-1 decision at Saint Joseph's.
Lewis held dominating edges in shots (15-6) and corner kicks (11-2). However after a scoreless first half it was the Pumas who got on the board first thanks to an unassisted goal at 47:41 by Stephanie Wiethop.
Lewis tied it up at 71:49 when freshman Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) scored her first career goal. The tally was assisted by sophomores Amanda Slove (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) and Allison Schieffer (Channahon, Ill./Minooka).
As the second half continued a wintery mix started to fall. Senior Jessica McNamara (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) made sure the Flyers didn't need to brave the elements for much longer when she tallied an unassisted goal at 83:06 for the game winner.
The Flyers earned a free kick off a hand ball just outside the box. Lewis drove it hard into the box and after the ball deflected around for a bit McNamara snuck it in the left post for the tally.
"I'm proud that when we gave up the early goal in the second half we didn't change our mentality," head coach Chris Koenig said. "We knew if we kept plugging at it we'd pull it out. We'll enjoy this tonight and then refocus for Sunday."
Lewis improves to 3-8-2 (2-7-1 GLVC). Saint Joseph's falls to 1-11 (0-9 GLVC). The Flyers host UW-Parkside on Sunday at noon.
