Baseball Drops Non-Conference Contest At Saint Xavier 8-7

Flyers earn nine walks

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – A six run seventh inning for Saint Xavier lifted the Cougars to an 8-7 decision over Lewis baseball on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Lewis entered the seventh leading 6-2 before the Cougars plated six and took an 8-6 lead. The Flyers scored one in the ninth but couldn't tie it up, leaving runners on first and second to end the game.
 
“We had one inning where we couldn't stop the bleeding and that was all it took,” head coach Tim McDonough said. “We fought back at the end but came up a hit short.”
 
Lewis scored three runs in the first inning. Sophomore Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) had a two-out two RBI single in the frame.
 
The Cougars scored two runs in the second. Lewis responded with one in the third and two in the fifth.
 
Senior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice) (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) finished with three hits. Senior Matt Zicher (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey) (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey/Triton) started for Lewis. He went 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits for a no-decision. Freshman Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) took the loss for Lewis. His record drops to 2-1.
 
Saint Xavier improves to 13-12-1. Lewis falls to 10-7. The Flyers are next in action on Saturday, hosting Indianapolis at noon in a conference doubleheader.
