Lewis Men’s Tennis Sweeps Singles Play For 8-1 Victory Over Bellarmine

Lapimaa remains undefeated in conference singles action.

– In less than 24 hours after a 5-4 loss to Northern Kentucky on Friday, the Lewis University men's tennis team bounced back for an 8-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over host Bellarmine on Saturday (Apr. 16) afternoon at the Eddie Weber Tennis Center.

With the win, the Flyers improve to 11-4 (3-2 GLVC) while the Knights drop to 6-10 (2-5 GLVC). 

“We responded outstandingly today after the setback yesterday to Northern Kentucky,” Lewis head men's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. “We could have made excuses after only eight hours in our hotel but instead we made shots.”

Lewis' Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) and Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare Kool) (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare Kool) upended Jacob Knagenhjelm and Carlos Antonioli, 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Lapimaa earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Knagenhjelm at No. 1 singles for his 19th straight win in singles play. Irdoja defeated Antonioli, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 singles.

Flyer junior Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) won a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 decision at No. 3 singles over Todd Atcher while Lewis senior Lorenz Pestinger (Bad Homburg, Germany/Humboldtschule) (Bad Homburg, Germany/Humboldtschule/Missouri Valley) won over Jay Acton, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.

At No. 3 doubles, Lewis sophomore Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and graduate student Jonathan Teune (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South/Taylor University) defeated Alex Chanley and Michael Heinekamp, 8-3.

Hardacre earned a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Paul Clark at No. 4 singles while Teune took down Chip Jabaley, 8-2 at No. 6 singles.

The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday (Apr. 19), hosting Olivet Nazarene at 2 PM in a non-conference home match at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex.
