Men’s Tennis Cruises Past UIS, 9-0

Lapimaa wins 14th straight at No. 1 singles.

– The Lewis University men's tennis team won a 9-0 decision over Illinois-Springfield on Tuesday (Apr. 5) afternoon in a non-conference home match at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex. 

With the win, the Flyers improve to 8-2 while the Prairie Stars fall to 5-9.

Lewis redshirt juniors Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) and Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare Kool) earned an 8-3 win over Punsisi Darayatne and Josh Patrick at No. 1 doubles.   

Lapimaa defeated Darayatne, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles while Irdoja earned a 6-1, 5-7, 10-8 victory over Matt McGowan at No. 3 singles.

Flyer juniors Lorenz Pestinger (Bad Homburg, Germany/Humboldtschule/Missouri Valley) and Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) claimed victory at No. 2 doubles over McGowan and Ben Main, 8-0. Wojnarowski won a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Patrick at No. 2 singles and Pestinger defeated Sharma Kumar, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.

At No. 3 doubles, Lewis' Jonathan Teune (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South/Taylor University) and Brandon Tilton (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) earned an 8-5 win over Kumar and Mike Czarny. Teune defeated Main, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.

Lewis freshman Selwyn Hansana (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) won a 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 decision at No. 6 singles over Scott Mauer.

The Flyers are back in action on Friday (Apr. 8), hosting Ferris State at 2 PM.
