ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 14 Lewis women's volleyball earned two victories on Saturday at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers picked up their first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season by sweeping Kentucky Wesleyan 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 in the afternoon. Lewis returned to the court in the nightcap to sweep St. Francis (Ill.) 25-18, 25-17, 25-10.
In the first match of the day, Lewis defeated Kentucky Wesleyan (3-6, 0-2 GLVC) thanks to 10 aces. Senior

Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central)# (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) totaled four kills.
Lewis continued their dominant play against St. Francis (8-5) as the Flyers out-hit the Fighting Saints .248 to -.034. Lewis had four players record double-digit digs, led by sophomore
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills)'s (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) 20. Mitros added 12 digs while recording seven kills. Junior
Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) had a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs. Freshman setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) also had a double-double, totaling 31 assists and 10 digs.
The Flyers out-blocked the Fighting Saints 11-to-2. Mount had five blocks (one solo) while hitting .333 with eight kills.
The first set against St. Francis had two lead changes and one tie. Lewis never trailed in the second and third sets after opening each frame with multiple points.
Freshman
Melanie Kuczek (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) had just one kill in the match, but it came for the 25th in set number three.
“Leigh had a breakthrough match against St. Francis as far as running an offense, defensively and connecting with her hitters,” head coach
Lorelee Smith said. “Her breakthrough performance helped the team flow better as a whole.”
The Flyers are now 5-2 (1-1 GLVC).
Lewis is at UW-Parkside on Tuesday for the Flyers' first road GLVC contest of the season.
