RENSSELAER, Ind. – Thanks to goals by freshmen Susan Thomas (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) and Daniella DiGioia (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) the Lewis women's soccer team defeated St. Joseph's 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Flyers' first goal came at 32:53 when Thomas jumped on a bouncing ball 20 yards out and put it over the goalkeeper's head. DiGioia assisted on the goal.

At the 56:01 mark in the second half the Flyers extended their lead to 2-0 with a tally by DiGioia. Her initial shot was stopped but she stayed with the play and directed the rebound into the net.

“The last two games the freshmen have stepped up,” head coach Chris Koenig said. “We've been trying to get Daniella more attack minded and she looked more comfortable going toward the goal today and that is why she scored.”

The win improves Lewis to 2-1 and 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Pumas fall to 0-3 and 0-2 in the GLVC.

The Flyers held a 38-5 edge in shots. 27 of Lewis' shots were on goal. The Flyers led 17-2  in corner kicks.

“Our performance for the most part was pretty clean, it could have been better in the final third, but we created a lot of chances,” Koenig said. “It would have been nice to capitalize on a few more of those chances however I'm happy to start the GLVC season 2-0.”

The Flyers are at UIS on Friday and then travel to Quincy on Sunday.
