ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Junior Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) hit .450 with a career-high 20 kills while adding eight digs to help No. 22 Lewis women's volleyball upset No. 12 Northern Kentucky 3-1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-19, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon in front of a boisterous homecoming crowd at Neil Carey Arena.

Krumwiede was on fire early, recording eight kills on nine swings in the first set. The junior didn't make a hitting error until the fourth set. She was helped by senior Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan)'s (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) career-high 15 kills and six blocks (one solo). Koeneman recorded five kills in the opening set but was at her best down the stretch, turning eight attempts into six kills with no errors in the fourth set. Sophomore Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) had her fourth 20-dig match of the season by recording exactly 20.

“Jen is creating more range with how she swings and how she approaches her attempts,” head coach Lorelee Smith said. “Amy is reading hitters better and is coming up with what we like to call bonus digs.”

If Lewis didn't end up winning the match they would have regretted the second set in which the Flyers held a 17-11 lead only to see the Norse rally to win.

The third set had a similar feel for the Flyers, Lewis took a quick 12-9 lead, only to see Northern Kentucky score the next four points. Lewis rallied back to grab a 17-14 advantage, before the Norse tied it at 18. However it would be the Norse's final rally as Lewis scored the next six points.

The Flyers took that momentum to the fourth set by grabbing a quick 8-3 lead. Lewis would never let the Norse back in it and won the set 25-19. Senior Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) had a kill on match point.

Following a 1-3 start to Great Lakes Valley Conference play, the Flyers have won their last three contests.

“I think each one of the individuals is coming more aware of where the other five are on the court when we are in system and out of system,” Smith said. “I think it makes us look scrappier on defense.”

The Norse entered the contest leading the GLVC with a .373 attack percentage. However the Flyers upset the Norse on Saturday by out-hitting them .293 to .192. The Flyers offense was run by freshman setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek), who recorded 50 assists.

Northern Kentucky falls to 10-2 (5-2 GLVC). Lewis improves to 8-4 (4-3 GLVC). The Flyers are at Maryville on Saturday.
