LOUISVILLE, Ky.
– Lewis women's soccer took undefeated No. 16 Bellarmine to overtime, but in the end dropped a 1-0 decision to the Knights on Friday evening in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest. Bellarmine held a 12-10 edge in shots through regulation, but took advantage of their first shot in extra time to earn the conference victory.

Christina Kapsalis headed in a free kick from Lauren Triplett for the Knights. The time of the goal was 93:22.

“Both teams had a lot of set piece chances and in the end they capitalized on theirs,” head coach Chris Koenig said.

Bellarmine held a 6-3 edge in shots in the opening half, but only a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal. Scoring chances picked up in the second half, with Lewis holding a 7-6 advantage in shots in the second frame.

Sophomore Ariel Miller (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) (Rockford, Ill./Boylan), freshman Daniella DiGioia (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and freshman Susan Thomas (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) each had two shots for Lewis.

“We had some injuries during the week and had some people step in and do a nice job,” Koenig said. “However there is no way you lose a game like this and feel anything but frustration. It will hurt tonight but there is another big test on Sunday.”

Bellarmine improves to 8-0-1 (7-0 GLVC). Lewis falls to 4-3-1 (4-2-1 GLVC). The Flyers have another shot at a top 25 team when they travel to No. 19 Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. CT start.
