The Flyers improve to 9-5-1 on the season and 7-5-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, while the Pumas fall to 3-12-1, 2-10-1 in the GLVC.
Lewis honored
Kylen Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) (Elmhurst, Ill./York),
Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett),
Libby Cooper (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) (Batavia, Ill./Batavia),
Danielle Warner (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South),
Jenny Hyde (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake) (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake) and
Shelley Hadlock (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) prior to the start of the game.
"The girls know we're playing for a lot right now," Lewis head women's soccer coach
Chris Koenig said. "There are postseason implications on every game right now."
SJC got on the board first in the 18th minute when Haley Celebre scored off a free kick, putting the ball past Lewis goalkeeper
Arianna Nie (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and in the top left corner of the goal.
Freshman
Jessica Saffell (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) scored the equalizer in the 20th minute, when she put the pass from Cooper into the lower left corner of the goal.
"It was nice to get on the board again," Koenig said. "I think getting those early goals, especially before halftime, forced Saint Joseph's to have to chase the rest of game."
Freshman
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) pushed the Flyers to a two goal advantage late in the first half. Her first goal came in the 30th minute, after she got past the defense and shot the ball past SJC's goalkeeper Amanda Volk into the lower left corner of the goal. Moran's second goal of the game found the back of the net in the 43rd minute after Saffell passed her the ball from deep in the right corner of the field.
"The underclassmen stepped in and made an impact for us," Koenig said. "Tonight was a good example of what they are capable of."
In the second half, Lewis kept on the offensive gas pedal. Saffell sent a deep cross from the right corner of the field to sophomore
Lauren Bowles (Libertyville, Ill./Carmel Catholic), who put the ball into the lower corner for the goal in the 48th minute.
Freshman midfielder
Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) got in on the scoring action in the 64th minute when
Julie Gunnerson (Darien, Ill./Hindsdale South) sent a pass up the field. Grady controlled the ball and shot it into the top left corner to push the Flyers lead to 5-1.
Lewis' sixth goal of the game came off sophomore
Sarah Pawelko's (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) free kick in the 68th minute of the contest.
The Flyers next game is on the road at the University of Indianapolis, on Sunday (Oct. 21), with kickoff set for 12 PM.
