Liberty, Mo.  – Two last-second shots both went high as the Lewis University women's soccer team fell in its Great Lakes Valley Conference quarterfinal match against No. 2 seed William Jewell, 1-0, on Sunday (Oct. 28) at Greene Stadium.

Sophomore Sarah Pawelko (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and freshman Julie Gunnerson (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) each took a shot in the last 15 seconds of the game to try to push the game into overtime, but both shots went high.

The Flyers finish the season at 10-7-1 while the Cardinals improve to 14-1-3 on the season.

“I am really proud of the way this group played today,” Lewis head women's soccer coach Chris Koenig said. “I couldn't have asked the team to do more as they executed the game plan and left everything out on the field.”

At the end of one half, both squads had battled to a 0-0 tie. William Jewell took a 5-3 shot advantage into the second period.

“Today was a typical first-round post season game,” Koenig said. “The second half was the most urgent and sharpest the team has played all year.”

The Cardinals got on the board in the 56th minute when Olivia Dykes received a pass from Sali Stout inside of the box. Dykes fired the ball past Lewis goalkeeper Arianna Nie (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) for the eventual game-winner. Nie also had four saves in the contest.

The Flyers didn't let off the attack on offense, taking 10 shots in the second half to force the Cardinals goalkeeper Kelli Sontag to make four saves to protect William Jewell's lead.

Freshman Jessica Saffell (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) led the Flyers with two shots, both on goal. The Cardinals ended the match with a 14-13 shot advantage.
