Somers, Wis. – Lewis University women's volleyball senior middle hitter
Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township) put together her fifth consecutive match with double-digit kills, tallying 17 in the 3-1 (25-20, 14-25, 25-21, 25-16) victory over UW-Parkside on Tuesday (Oct. 30) at the DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Flyers improve to 19-9 on the season and 11-3 against Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents, while the Rangers fall to 17-9, 6-8 in conference play. Lewis swept the season series between the two teams, 2-0, only dropping one set to UW-Parkside.
Perschnick also had two blocks while
Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) had 14 digs and 12 kills for her 11
th double-double of the season. Freshman
Lauren O'Brien (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) stepped up to earn 14 kills for the Flyers.
“Carly is in a really good rhythm,” Lewis head women's volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith said. “She's playing like a senior that wants to go out on a high note.”
In the first set, Lewis strung together eight points with
Mary Carroll (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) at serve to put the game away, 25-20. The Flyers scored with two kills each from Mitros and Perschnick, a service ace from Carroll and capitalized on three attack errors by the Rangers.
The Flyers offense stalled in the second set. After starting the set with a 3-0 lead, Lewis didn't hold a lead again as the squad was unable to put together more than two consecutive points, dropping the set 25-14.
“Mary stepped up as a senior captain after the second set and said the right things,” Smith said. “She told the team that how they played in the second set was unacceptable and we are much better than how we played.
“We are fighting for the postseason and the way we played in the second set didn't show that.”
Lewis rallied in the third set, taking control from the first point and not relinquishing the lead. With
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) serving at 16-12, the Flyers were able to push the lead to four points, an advantage they held to win the set 25-21. Barea had 46 assists in the four set contest.
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) held serve in the fourth set for seven straight points to take an 18-9 lead. The Flyers got three kills by Mitros, one kill from Perschnick, and a service ace from Choi. The Rangers committed two attack errors while Choi was serving. The junior libero had 32 of the Flyers 87 digs. The Flyers clinched the match with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set.
“I have to give some credit to Mary and Amy for their work at the service line,” Smith said. “Last weekend they weren't consistent at the line and tonight they picked it up and gave the Rangers' passers trouble.”
