Houghton, Mich. - The Lewis University men's tennis team received solid efforts from the top of the line-up on down, as the Flyers earned a crucial 9-0 regional victory over Michigan Tech at the Gates Tennis Center on Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon.
"It was a good team win and a great start to the spring," Lewis head men's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "Overall we played pretty solid and our freshmen stepped in and did a real nice job."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 1-1 on the campaign, while the host Huskies are now 2-2.
Lewis senior
Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) started the day off with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Michigan Tech's Anders Sandholm. Lapimaa would also team with freshman
Armand Levandi (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) (Tallinn, Estonia / Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) at No. 1 doubles for the 8-5 win over Luka Stupar and Doug Yossida. Levandi would also claim the 5-7, 6-1, 10-4 win over Stupar at No. 2 singles.
At No. 3 singles, freshman
Erik Aunapuu (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) (Tallinn, Estonia / Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) upended Yossida, 6-1, 6-1. Aunapuu teamed up with senior
Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) at No. 2 doubles for the 8-3 win over Sandholm and Andrew Kremkow. Wojnarowski was also victorious at No. 4 singles, defeating James Konarske, 6-2, 6-1.
Lewis junior
Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) defeated Andrew Kremkow 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Hardacre and freshman
Isriz Balase (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) (Shaumberg, Ill./Schaumburg) defeated Bryan Bartelt and Konarske 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. Balase finished the sweep of Michigan Tech by defeating Bartelt 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6 singles.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 19) for another regional showdown with Lake Superior State. First serve is set for 9 a.m. (EST).
