ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Behind a career-high 17 kills from freshman Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) No. 7 Lewis men's volleyball earned a 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18) non-conference victory over Mount Olive on Tuesday (Feb. 28) evening at Neil Carey Arena.

Powell hit .625 with only two errors on 24 attempts. He also added an ace for good measure.

Things looked easy for the Flyers in the first set, taking a 15-7 lead and never looking back. Lewis had only one hitting error in the frame.

The Flyers took control of the second thanks to a 7-0 run after Mount Olive grabbed a 10-8 lead. Lewis benefited from four Trojan hitting errors in the 7-0 stretch.

Lewis had their lowest attack percentage in the third set, but still out-hit the Trojans .215 to .150. Mount Olive won the set thanks to nine Lewis service errors in the frame. Lewis service errors accounted for points 22, 23 and 24 for the Trojans.

The Flyers left no doubt in the final set by hitting .579 (14-3-19) in the fourth.

“We came out pretty good in the first couple games and did a nice job of establishing what we wanted to do on our side of the net,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “We played some different lineups in the second and third set and it was a good learning experience for guys who don't play much though ultimately we ended up dropping that third set due to some unforced errors.”

Junior Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) finished with 10 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Karbiener and freshman Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) each added six defensively. Petty also recorded two aces. All told 16 different Flyers saw time on the court in the match.

Mount Olive falls to 6-12. Lewis improves to 13-3. The win is Lewis' seventh straight victory. It's the fourth time since Friend took over the program in 2005 the Flyers have won seven in a row. Lewis hosts Quincy on Thursday at 7 p.m. A victory over the Hawks would give Friend his longest win-streak as Lewis' head coach.
