LIBERTY, Mo. – Behind a strong bullpen effort in game one and a complete game outing in the nightcap, Lewis baseball swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at William Jewell on Sunday (March 18) 11-6 and 4-1.

Freshman Anthony Baldassano (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) had the two biggest hits of game one. Baldassano finished 2-for-5 with five runs batted in and two runs scored. He had a bases clearing double in the fourth inning to knot the game at three after the Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the third.

Lewis added three more in the frame to take a 6-3 advantage. William Jewell scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to advance within one at 6-5. However Baldassano's first career home run, a one-out two run blast, in the fifth extended the Lewis advantage to 8-5. Baldassano's first career home run came a day after fellow freshman and high school teammate Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) hit his first collegiate home run on Saturday.

“Anthony's home run really gave us some breathing room,” Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said.

Senior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage) singled and eventually scored in the eighth inning. Brauer hit his second home run of the season in the ninth. It was a two-run shot. Brauer finished the game with three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Sophomore Tom Durkin (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) started but earned a no-decision after allowing five runs on five hits and four walks in 3.1 innings. Freshman Mike Devoe (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) threw 2.2 innings of no-hit ball in relief to pick up his first career decision. Devoe was part of a four-man bullpen effort that allowed just one hit over the final 5.1 innings. Freshman Phil Warner (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) pitched the final two innings, recording four strikeouts. He earned his second save of the season.

“Mike did a great job stemming the tide,” McDonough said. “The game was back and forth for a while and Mike gave us some important innings. He, Donny (Cizek), Kegan (Banks) and Phil all did well.”

Game two was the Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) (Olympia, Ill./Olympia) show. The junior threw a one-run complete game. He allowed seven hits and one walk while fanning six William Jewell batters. The win improves Frahm's record to 1-1.

Lewis scored an unearned run in the second. The Flyers made it 2-0 with a lone run in the third. Sophomore Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) tripled to score Brauer.

The Cardinals scored their only run in the contest in the fourth. It could have been worse but Frahm stranded two runners to end the inning.

“Matt did a great job throwing strikes and competing in the zone,” McDonough said. “We played good defense behind Matt and were really solid all day defensively.”

As Lewis did a day earlier at Rockhurst, the Flyers added some insurance in the seventh. First it was sophomore Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) hitting his second career home run. His solo shot made it 3-1. Senior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) singled with two outs and then used his speed to get into scoring position thanks to a stolen base. Bolling came around to score on a single by Barajas.

Barajas, Kapka and Albano all finished game two with two hits.

William Jewell falls to 8-8 (0-4 GLVC) while Lewis improves to 9-3 (3-1 GLVC). The Flyers play a doubleheader at UIS on Wednesday. UIS is a GLVC member; however the games will be counted as non-conference games.
