ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Thanks to 23 runs and 22 walks on the day Lewis baseball swept a non-conference doubleheader from Upper Iowa on Wednesday (March 28) 13-1 and 10-3. Sophomore
Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) hit three home runs on the day. He went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double and four RBI in game one. He then went 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBI and a pair of walks in game two.
“Out of the 12 innings we batted we scored in 11 of them so when you're putting runs up consistently like that it's always a good day,” Lewis head coach
Tim McDonough said.
Lewis scored 13 runs on 11 hits along with 10 walks in the opener. The Flyers scored in every inning but the third. Senior
Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage) homered in the fourth inning. Albano's game one home run was a three-run shot in the fifth inning well over the left center field wall. Sophomore
Kyle Huber (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) joined in the fun with a solo home run to right field in the sixth inning. It was his first collegiate home run.
On the mound, junior
Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton/Triton) was dealing. He allowed just one run on nine hits and no walks while striking out six. His record is now 2-1. Upper Iowa's starter, Fabian Lopez, is now 0-2 on the season after allowing seven runs in 3.2 innings.
“Michael was outstanding in game one after a rough outing last week,” McDonough said. “I thought be bounced back really nice.”
The offensive explosion continued in game two with the Flyers scoring in every inning. Albano hit a two-run home run in the first and added a solo shot in the fourth. Brauer, sophomore
Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) and sophomore
Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) each knocked in a pair of runs. As a team, Lewis recorded 11 walks in game two.
Senior
Jim Glasgow (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South/Joliet Junior College) started for Lewis and allowed just an unearned run on one hit in four innings. Rory Kolo (0-1) took the loss for Upper Iowa.
“Jim did a real good job,” McDonough said. “He's been battling some nagging arm things that he's just getting over and it's good to see him out there throwing strikes.”
Upper Iowa falls to 7-12. Lewis improves to 14-6. The Flyers welcome Saint Joseph's to Romeoville on Saturday and Sunday for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheaders. Start time for both doubleheaders is noon at Brennan Field.
