Romeoville, Ill. - After their 10-match winning streak came to an end against Rockhurst, the No. 37 Lewis University men's tennis team got back on track with an 8-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference triumph over Saint Joseph's at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex on Friday (March 30) afternoon.
"It was good to get back on the court and get a different result," Lewis head men's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "I don't think we missed a beat in doubles and I thought we competed and played pretty hard in singles too."
With the win, Lewis improves to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in GLVC, while the visiting Pumas fall to 11-10 on the campaign and 0-2 in conference play.
The Flyers swept all three doubles matches against the Pumas, beginning at No. 1 where senior
Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) and freshman
Armand Levandi (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) blanked Saint Joseph's Adam Meeker and Joseph Bomben, 8-0. Lapimaa also defeated Bomben, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, while Levandi claimed the 6-0, 6-2 win over Danny James at No. 3 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, Lewis'
John Richert (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and
Erik Aunapuu (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) throttled James and Seth Arthur, 8-1. Richert also defeated Carl Fisher, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles, while Aunapuu shutout Arthur, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
Providing the final doubles victory for the Flyers was the No. 3 tandem of
Isriz Balase (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg/Harper) and
Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's), as they defeated Matt Slawson and Joseph Scott, 8-3. Hardacre also beat Scott, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (March 31) for a regional showdown against Wayne State. First serve is set for 12 p.m. at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex.
