ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis baseball scored in all 13 innings they batted during a 14-4 (7 inn.), 10-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of UW-Parkside on Wednesday (April 18) afternoon at Brennan Field.
“We've worked on our approach at the plate and guys are really starting to get locked in,” Lewis head coach
Tim McDonough said. “Baseball is a game that needs to be played because the more you play the more comfortable you feel as a hitter in the box.”
Junior
Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton/Triton) hit three home runs on the day. He had two in the first game, including first inning grand slam. He added a two-run shot in the third inning. Senior
Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) hit a solo shot to centerfield in the second inning, it was his third home run of the season. Schroeder finished game one with six runs batted in. Sophomore
Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) had three hits, three RBI and two runs scored in the opener.
The game was halted due to the 10-run rule in the bottom of the seventh when the Flyers scored a pair to make it 14-4.
Senior
Jim Glasgow (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South/Joliet JC) went four innings to pick up the win. He is now 2-0. He allowed three runs on three hits and five walks while fanning four Rangers. Junior
Derek Thomas (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the season. Josh Hudnut (1-2) took the loss for UW-Parkside.
“Jim battled and then Derek came in and did a great job competing in the strike a zone,” McDonough said.
The Rangers held their only lead of the day when they scored a lone run in the first inning of game two. It didn't last long as Schroeder struck again in the bottom of the first. This time it was a three-run shot, his third of the day and seventh of the season, to put Lewis up 3-1.
The Flyers added single runs in each inning except for the fifth when Lewis put three on the board, thanks partly to a two-run home run by sophomore
Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs). It was his second of the day after hitting a solo shot in the third. Albano now has GLVC-leading 10 home runs on the season.
On the mound, senior starter
Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) went six innings to move his record to 4-2. Lahey allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, no walks and two strikeouts. He leads the nation in fewest walks per nine innings. Lahey has walked only two batters in 52.2 innings. Lahey's ERA on the season is a team-best 1.88.
“It was great to only give up six runs on the day,” McDonough said. “I think I'm more pleased with the pitching today than the hitting because it was such a tough day to pitch,”
Albano finished game two with four RBI, four hits and three runs scored. Buddle scored three more runs and had two hits.
Alex Rejniak (0-1) took the loss for the Rangers in game two. UW-Parkside falls to 13-24 (6-18 GLVC). The Flyers improve to 26-11 (16-8 GLVC).
The Flyers have won their last five contests, all GLVC games. In those games Lewis has outscored their opponents 54-21. Lewis is batting .395, slugging .701 and holds an on base percentage of .480 in the contests. Lewis has hit 12 home runs while allowing just three.
The Flyers hope their hot bats travel with them as they head to Southern Indiana this weekend for GLVC doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
