ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis freshman outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) was named the 2012 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Freshman of the Year, the conference announced on Friday (April 20). Additionally, four Flyers were named All-MIVA.

Powell recorded 170 kills (2.30 per set), 72 digs, 32 blocks and 14 aces during his rookie campaign. Powell had double-digit kills in eight matches, including a season-best 19 with seven digs against Ball State on April 6. In the season opener at Pepperdine, Powell totaled 13 kills.

“Geoff really improved as the year progressed,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “He helped energize us as we finished the regular season by putting up some fantastic numbers.”

Sophomore setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) (Palatine, Ill./Palatine), junior outside hitter Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and senior middle blocker Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) collected All-MIVA First Team accolades. Senior middle blocker Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) took home All-MIVA Second Team honors.

Boldog finished the regular season second in the MIVA with 10.75 assists per set. He ran a Lewis offense which hit a MIVA best .318 for the season. No other MIVA team posted a season hitting percentage above .279. Boldog earned All-MIVA Second Team accolades last season.

“BJ took another step as an individual this year while directing our offense to the best team hitting percentage during my time at Lewis,” Friend said.

Petty earned three MIVA Offensive Player of the Week awards in 2012. He recorded 353 kills for a 3.92 per set average, third best in the MIVA. His 0.36 aces per set in MIVA matches led the conference. He set a single-match program record against Quincy on April 3 with seven aces. Defensively, Petty had only 12 reception errors in a team-leading 578 reception attempts. It is the second consecutive season Petty has earned All-MIVA First Team honors.

“Jay was fantastic in numerous matches, carrying us to several big wins.” Friend said. “His all-around game improved tremendously this season.”

Flick led the MIVA with a .519 hitting percentage. No Flyer has ever recorded a single season hitting percentage of .500, meaning Flick will likely finish the year with the program record for hitting percentage in a single season. Flick was an All-MIVA Second team selection last season.

Gallik led the Flyers and finished fourth in the MIVA with 106 blocks (1.10 per set). Offensively, Gallik finished with a career-best .423 hitting percentage this year. Gallik ranks fourth all-time in block assists (301) and fifth in blocks (340) at Lewis. It is the third consecutive season Gallik has earned All-MIVA Second Team honors.

“Aaron and Matt were rocks for us throughout the season, not only on the court but as senior captains as well,” Friend said. “Both guys had their best hitting seasons of their careers.”

The Flyers finished the regular season 23-6 (9-3 MIVA) and ranked No. 8 in the nation with a share of the 2012 MIVA regular season championship.

Lewis hosts Quincy on Friday (April 20) at 7 p.m. in the Quarterfinals of the 2012 MIVA Tournament. As the No. 2 seed, a Lewis win over Quincy would guarantee the Flyers host a MIVA Semifinal match on Wednesday, April 25 at 7 p.m.
