No. 8 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Quincy In MIVA Quarterfinals

Flyers record just eight hitting errors in the match

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 8 Lewis men's volleyball swept Quincy 25-16, 25-10, 25-16 in the 2012 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Quarterfinals on Friday (April 20) evening at Neil Carey Arena.
 
The second seeded Flyers out-hit seventh seeded Quincy .421-.031. Lewis also held a 10-0 edge in service aces. Senior Omar Sanchez (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South/Quincy) had back-to-back aces to finish the match.

“Ultimately when you're putting that type of pressure on a team it makes it really tough,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said.

Senior Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) recorded four aces and four blocks while adding a match-high nine kills.
 
The Flyers didn't trail until the third set. Lewis held the Hawks to a sub zero -.174 hitting percentage in the second set. The first set was highlighted by Petty's six kills and two aces.

“The guys came out ready to go from the beginning and took care of the ball from the service line and from a serve-receive standpoint,” Friend said.
 
Freshman Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) (Claremont, Calif./Claremont), who was named MIVA Freshman of the Year in the morning, hit .500 with seven kills on 14 swings and no errors. Senior middle hitter Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) had five kills with no errors and added four blocks.
 
The loss ends Quincy's season at 17-15.
 
Lewis improves to 24-6 overall and 14-0 at home this season. The win advances the Flyers to the MIVA Semifinals for a fifth consecutive season. The Flyers will host third seeded Loyola-Chicago on Wednesday, April 25th at 7 p.m. in the Semifinals. The two clubs split the two meetings this season.
