EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Lewis baseball split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Southern Indiana on Sunday (April 22). The Flyers dropped the opener 5-3 and won game two 7-1.

The story of game two was junior starting pitcher Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton/Triton). Schroeder threw a complete game 9.0 innings to move his record to 5-1 on the season. He allowed just one run on seven hits and one walk. He struck out four USI batters. The Flyers defense didn't commit a single error behind Schroeder and turned two double plays.

“Schroeder was pretty comfortable on the mound today,” Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. “He had good command, his pitches were working and there were no doubts about sending him out for the ninth.”

The Lewis offense gave Schroeder early breathing room by scoring three unearned runs in the first inning. Senior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) tripled down the right field line to leadoff the game.

The Flyers scored two runs in the seventh and single runs in the eighth and ninth. The only blemish on Schroeder's line was a lone run in the seventh by USI. The Screaming Eagles left just four runners on base while the Flyers left 12.

Sophomore Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) finished game two with three RBI on two hits and a walk. Senior Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) recorded three hits and scored three times. Sophomore Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) scored twice and knocked in a run.

“I love add-on runs and Kyle (Kapka) had a big two RBI double for us in the seventh,” McDonough said. “Game two was a complete game with good pitching, good defense and timely hitting. Those are pretty good ingredients for a win.”

Jim Mulvaney took the loss for USI and is now 2-2.

Like the opener on Saturday at USI, Lewis scored first in game one on Sunday. This time it was a lone run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Albano. It was his 11th home run of the season. USI bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Two more in the fifth made it 5-1. The Flyers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh. Bolling singled to left to knock in two runs with two outs. However he was put out on a fielder's choice to end the ballgame.

Silas Dill earned the win for USI. He is now 4-6 after going 6.0 innings. Senior Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) took the loss for the Flyers. He allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and no walks with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Lahey is now 4-3.

“The whole weekend we played well,” McDonough said. “However, game one today was similar to yesterday's where we just didn't get the hits when we needed them.”

USI is now 22-19 (13-15 GLVC). The Flyers are 28-13 (18-10 GLVC). The Flyers host St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday in a non-conference single game at 3 p.m.
