No. 9 Lewis Men's Volleyball Welcomes Ball State To Neil Carey Arena On Friday

Flyers look for seventh MIVA win of the season

The Flyers hope to be celebrating a 12th home win on Friday against Ball State.

No. 9 Lewis men's volleyball (20-6, 6-3 MIVA) hosts Ball State (11-8, 4-5 MIVA) on Friday (April 6) in a crucial Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association contest. The match will start 7 p.m. and air live on Lakeshore Public Television.

LAST TIME OUT - Lewis swept Quincy on Tuesday (April 2) evening (25-13, 25-17, 25-12). Freshman Eric Butch (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) ran a Lewis offense that hit .500 on the night. Butch finished with 32 assists.
 
LAST TIME WE MET - Ball State and Lewis met on Feb. 5 when the Flyers picked up a 3-0 victory (44-42, 25-19, 25-15). Senior Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) led Lewis with 17 kills and eight digs.
 
MARATHON WIN - The last time the teams met, Lewis needed 44 points to win the first set. It tied for the most points in a single game in Lewis' history. The set lasted 46 minutes and featured 86 points, 25 ties and eight lead changes.
 
LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN - Against Quincy on Tuesday evening, senior Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) recorded seven aces. It set a school record for service aces in a single match.
 
HITTING HARD - Lewis' .316 hitting percentage leads the MIVA. Lewis has not finished a season hitting above .300 in the Dan Friend era. The Flyers also lead the MIVA in holding their opponents to the lowest hitting percentage at .205.
 
A WIN AND... - A Lewis win on Friday matches the most overall wins (21) since Dan Friend took over in 2005. Both his 2008 and 2009 teams won 21 matches.
 
IT'S ALL IN THE FLICK OF THE WRIST - Not only is senior Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) recording a career high hitting percentage but his .517 mark is also leading the MIVA.
 
HOME SWEET HOME - Lewis enters Friday's contest 11-0 at home this season.
 
HOW SWEEP IT IS - A win on Friday would give Lewis their first regular season sweep of Ball State since 2004.
 
BOOM BOOM POWELL - Over the last seven matches freshman Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) is hitting .343 (49-13-105), for an average of 2.23 kills per set.
 
TOP FIVE - Seniors Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) (292) and Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) (287) rank fourth and fifth all-time in Lewis history in block assists.
 
NEXT UP - The Flyers close out the 2012 regular season with back-to-back visits by Grand Canyon next week. The Flyers host Grand Canyon on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14. Both matches have 7 p.m. starts. Saturday's contest will be Senior Night. Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice), Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) and Omar Sanchez (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) will be honored in a pre-match ceremony.
