HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Lewis baseball split a doubleheader at Northern Kentucky on Sunday (May 6) on the final day of the regular season. The Flyers lost the opener 7-1 and won the second contest 12-7. The win in game two clinched a berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament for a third consecutive season.

After scoring just the one run in game one, the Flyers scored in every inning except the eighth in game two. The top six batters of the lineup had a combined 16 hits, 10 RBI and nine runs scored. Senior Andrew Brauer (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Montini/College of DuPage) went 3-for-5 with five runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs), sophomore Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) and senior Mike Bolling (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep) (Chicago, Ill./Guerin Prep/Triton) each recorded three hits. Bolling swiped his league leading 34th stolen base in game two. Albano had a triple in each game.

“We had our backs against the wall in game two and knew we needed to win,” Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. “Sometimes in game four on a weekend you just have to outscore the opponent and the guys responded offensively."

Lewis scored two in the first and only trailed when the Norse scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first. The Flyers answered back with three in the second and kept on scoring.

“We did a nice job later in the game of adding on runs and keeping the gap at three or four runs,” McDonough said.

Junior Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton/Triton) allowed 11 hits and seven runs (two earned) in 7.0 innings to pick up the win. Schroeder is now 6-2. Senior Drew Hicks (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) didn't allow a run in the final two innings. Matt Jefferson (5-2) started and took the loss for NKU.

“Michael battled and threw the ball well to give us seven innings, then Drew came in and did his thing,” McDonough said. “However, we need to do a better job defensively.”

Game one swung on a five-run third inning for the Norse. Senior Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) took the loss to drop his record to 5-4. He allowed seven hits and five runs (three earned) in 3.0 innings. Tim Clark (4-2) earned the win for NKU.

The Flyers tried to rally, but stranded two runners in each of the final three innings.

NKU is now 32-18 (25-11 GLVC). Lewis concludes the regular season 32-18 (21-15 GLVC). The 21 conference wins match the most single-season GLVC victories in program history. The 1996 club went 21-7.

The Flyers are next in action on Thursday at the 2012 GLVC Tournament in Evansville, Ind.

Lewis does not yet know their seed in the tournament. Missouri-St. Louis and Missouri S&T are making up rained out contest from April 29 on Tuesday (May 8).

Tuesday's contest will determine the fate of four teams and the final three seeds. Currently, Drury and Lewis are in the tournament with identical 21-15 records and a winning percentage of .583.

The top three teams from the GLVC East Division, along with the top two from the GLVC West Division and three wildcard squads make up the eight-team field, based on winning percentage in conference play.

Should Missouri-St. Louis defeat Missouri S&T on Tuesday, the Tritons would improve to 20-14 (.588) and secure the No. 6 seed, while Drury would then receive the No. 7 seed on a tiebreaker that saw the Panthers defeat Lewis 14-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on March 25. Lewis would be left with the No. 8 seed in the tournament should the Tritons score the win.

If Missouri-St. Louis falls to Missouri S&T on Tuesday, the Tritons would drop to 19-15 (.559) on the year and into a tie with Bellarmine. The Knights swept UMSL during a March 25 doubleheader and would earn the No. 8 seed based on a head-to-head tiebreak. In this scenario, Drury would receive the No. 6 seed, while Lewis would earn the No. 7 seed.
