Denver, Colo. - The No. 17 Lewis Women's Volleyball team fell to West Florida 25-19, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20 in their opening match at the Colorado Premier Challenge. In the second match of the day, Lewis fell to No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul, 25-19, 25-12, 21-25, 25-14, to fall to 3-3 on the season. West Florida improved to 3-3 on the season, as Concordia-St. Paul improved to 4-1.
Against West Florida, Lewis fell behind in the first set (25-19) but the squad was able to bounce back to hold onto the second (25-21) before relinquishing the third (25-15) and fourth (25-20) sets.
"We didn't come ready to play (against West Florida)," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "(West Florida) took us by surprise and we had to play catch-up the rest of the match."
Redshirt freshman Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) led the way for the Flyers, earning 13 kills with one service ace. Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) and Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) both collected two service aces.
Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) and Vertin led the defense with three blocks apiece against the Argonauts. Setter Vivian Pritz (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) chipped in with game-high 32 assists, while libero Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) controlled 20 digs.
West Florida's Lindsay Homme led all players with 21 kills.
In the second match of the day for Lewis battled No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul to a 25-19, 25-12, 21-25, 25-14, result. Freshmen Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) and Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) had big games for the Flyers. Parsons led Lewis with 17 kills and six digs while Cebula stood tall with a team-leading three blocks.
"(Cassidy and Morgan) did really well tonight," said Smith. "They got into the game and were hard to stop."
Sophomore setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) led Lewis with 29 assists, adding 10 digs and two kills.
Concordia-St. Paul had four players with double-digit kills and three players with double-digit digs. Kayla Koenecke led her squad with 10 kills, eight digs, seven blocks and four assists.
Lewis is back in action on Saturday, day two of the Colorado Premier Challenge, against No. 5 Central Missouri at 9:30AM MT.
