Rolla, Mo. - Lewis University sophomore forward
Robert Zieba (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) beat Missouri S&T goalkeeper Matt Jackson in the 85th minute with a blast from 20 yards out into the upper right corner to lift the No. 20 Flyers to the 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference road victory over the host Miners at the Missouri S&T Soccer Field on Friday (Oct. 25) night.
"It's always hard to get a win on the road (in this conference)," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "S&T played hard, but I thought we controlled a lot of the second half."
Lewis'
Michael Pyle (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) and
George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) assisted on Zieba's score.
"Robert had a great goal," Fiffles said. "He's been working hard in practice and it is paying off."
With the win, Lewis improves to 10-1-4 on the season and 9-1-3 in GLVC action. The Flyers have not lost in their last 10 GLVC regular-season road contests, dating back to a 3-2 overtime loss to Southern Indiana on September 23, 2012. Missouri S&T falls to 6-7-2 on the campaign and 5-6-2 in conference play.Â
Lewis goalkeeper
Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence ) turned away both Miner shots that he faced for his seventh solo shutout of the season. As a team, Lewis has recorded nine shutouts - which is the most by a Flyer squad since the '09 team blanked 14 opponents. Jackson made five saves on the evening.
The Flyers outshot Missouri S&T, 15-9, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 27), as they head to Springfield, Mo., for a 2:30 PM kickoff against Drury.
