Rolla, Mo. – The Lewis University women's soccer team combined a solid defensive performance with a dominant presence in the attacking third of the field on Friday (Oct. 25), to shut out Missouri S&T, 4-0, at the Missouri S&T Soccer Field for their fifth clean sheet of the season.

The Flyers improve to 8-5-2 on the year and 6-5-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Miners fall to 3-7-3 on the campaign and 3-7-3 in league play.

"Today was an all-around solid performance by the team," Lewis head women's soccer coach Chris Koenig said. "Each of our goals were quality ones."

Lewis took a 1-0 lead into halftime, after sophomores Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) and Jessica Chavez (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) connected in the middle of the box for Chavez' GLVC-leading ninth goal of the season at 39:07.

At the 48:33 mark junior Susan Thomas (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) was able to get around the Missouri S&T wall on a free kick from the 18-yard line to push the Flyers' lead to 2-0.

Lewis flexed their offensive power again in the 55th minute, when Moran scored off a shot from the 18-yard line. Thomas picked up a third point in the game, with the assist on the play.

In a set of quick passes in the 83rd minute, Chavez fed sophomore Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) for the Flyers fourth goal of the game.

The Lewis defense held the Miners to just seven shots while taking 13 shots, with six on goal.

Flyers' goalkeeper junior Mara Bennett (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) collected one save in her first shut of the season. Missouri S&T goalkeepers, Madison Gibler and Carrie Levy, each collected a save in the contest.

"We have been preaching consistency for a whole game," Koenig said. "Now we need to be consistent for the whole weekend as our season is coming to a close."
