Allendale, Mich. – The Lewis University women's volleyball team's season came to an end on Thursday (Dec. 5) when they fell to No. 23 Ferris State 3-1 (22-25, 25-27, 25-18, 25-18) in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
The Flyers completed the season with a 24-10 record, while the Bulldogs improve to 23-8 on the year.
"We went with a new line-up due to some injuries," Lewis head women's volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith said. "The team played well with the change, we just made some errors at inopportune times."
Sophomore outside hitter
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) hit .400, picking up 14 kills with two errors on 30 attack attempts and 11 digs for the Flyer offense. Sophomore middle hitter
Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) tallied nine kills while redshirt sophomore right side hitter
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) had nine kills and two block assists. Junior setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) collected 23 assists and eight digs as redshirt senior setter Vivan Pritz had 21 assists and four digs. Lewis redshirt freshman libero
Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) had a floor-high 20 digs.
The Flyers, going with a new line-up, won the battle late in the first set, as Davito and Parsons broke the 22-all tie with back-to-back kills. Freshman outside hitter
Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) got a solo block to close out the set for the Flyers. Davito paced the Flyers during the set with six putaways and a block assists during the set.
In a tight second set, the squads exchanged 19 ties and four lead changes. The Flyers were looking down set point at 24-22, but got a kill and a solo block from Cebula to tie the set at 24-all. Parsons picked up a kill for Lewis, but the Bulldogs took the second set.
Ferris State took control in the third set, to take a 2-1 set lead. The Bulldogs out blocked the Flyers 2-0 in the set, and picked up five service aces.
The Bulldogs then carried their momentum into the deciding fourth set as they heated up to hit .350 in the set tallying 17 kills with three errors in 40 attempts.
Ferris State was led by 17 kills and 12 digs from Courtney Rehm while Angi Kent tallied 15 kills. The Bulldogs' setter Stephanie Sikorski tallied 44 assists while libero Brandi Merren had 19 digs.
