Winter Haven, Fla. – An eight-run third inning followed by a five-run fourth was the key to the Lewis University baseball team's 13-0 victory over Ohio Dominican on Tuesday (March 5) at Chain of Lakes Field.
Lewis improves to 4-0 on the season while Ohio Dominican falls to 2-7.
“We had another big inning today,” Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. “It was good to see our batters were able to adjust the second time through the line-up.”
The Flyers scored eight runs on five hits and two Panther errors in the third inning. Senior
Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) hit a two RBI double while sophomore
Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) picked up two RBI his second time at the plate of the inning. Juniors
Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) and
Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) each picked up a RBI in the inning.
Lewis added five more runs in the fourth inning as senior
Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) and senior
Ian O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) each collected two RBI.
Sophomore pitcher
Phil Warner (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) picked up the win with a six-inning performance, allowing only three hits and striking out five. Freshman
JT Yocum (Lafayette, Ind./Ottawa Marquette) pitched an inning in relief and struck out one batter.
“We got a solid game from Phil on the mound,” McDonough said. “If he gives that much effort every time out, we are going to be pretty successful.”
Lewis has a day off before facing Ohio Dominican again on Thursday (March 7) at 2:30 PM ET at Chain of Lakes Field in Winter Haven, Fla.
