Auburndale, Fla. – The Lewis University baseball team rallied around strong pitching performances from senior
Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) and junior
Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) to pick up two victories over Gannon at Lake Myrtle Park on Friday (March 9). The Flyers won game one, 3-0, and the second game, 7-0.
The Flyers improve to 6-1 on the season while Gannon falls to 4-6.
“When your pitchers are able to hold the other team scoreless, it makes it easier to win,” Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. “Michael helped set the tone for us today with his performance. When he's on the mound, we are able to play with more confidence.”
Schroeder threw a complete game, seven-inning shutout in the first game, only giving up two hits, walking three and striking out four Gannon batters.
Freshman
Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) picked up one of the Flyers three hits on a big two-out double in the fourth inning, batting in two runs.
Gannon's Matt Wilwohl pitched six innings in the loss, allowing three runs on three hits, walking four and striking out four.
In the second game, Helwich picked up where Schroeder left off on the mound. Helwich threw his own seven-inning complete game, scattering five hits while striking out eight and walking one.
Junior
Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect), who went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, led the Flyers at the plate. Junior
Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), senior
Ian O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and sophomore
Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) each collected two hits in the contest.
Junior
Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) hit a big two-out, two-run home run in the third inning to put Lewis up 4-0. The Flyers also added two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh.
Gannon's Phil Cacchione took the loss in the second game, throwing six innings, giving up six runs on 13 hits and striking out two.
Lewis wraps up their trip to Florida with a game against Minnesota State-Mankato on Saturday (March 9) at 9:30 AM ET at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
