No. 8 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Extends Win Streak With 3-0 Sweep Over Princeton

Sophomore Geoff Powell tallied 10 kills for his 14th match of the season with double figure kills

Princeton, N.J. – The No. 8 Lewis University men's volleyball team extended their nation's-best 13-match winning streak with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-17) victory over Princeton in the program's first-ever meeting on Friday (March 8) at Dillon Gym.
 
The Flyers improve to 14-5 on the season while Princeton falls to 7-4.
 
“We got better in every game,” Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. “Once we were able to adjust to their style of play, we improved as the match went on.”
 
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) led the Flyers with 10 kills, four digs and four block assists. Freshman middle hitter Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) posted five block assists and three kills, while redshirt junior setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) tallied 27 assists, five kills in six attempts and four block assists.
 
Princeton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and extended it to 11-5, collecting points on seven Lewis errors. The Flyers used three three-point runs to tie the game at 17-all. A final three-point run, with a kill each from Powell and Boldog and an ace by sophomore outside hitter Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), won the set 25-23 in favor of the Flyers.
 
In the second set, the Flyers used a seven-point run to take an 18-10 lead. Redshirt sophomore Patrick Lilly (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) earned two aces while the Flyers got block assist from Walsh and Powell and a triple block by Walsh, Powell and Petty. Lewis took the set 25-18.
 
Lewis carried their momentum into the third set, as the Flyers used a three-point swing to take a 10-8 lead. Petty tallied six of his nine kills in the game and extended the Flyers lead to 18-12. Walsh earned a kill and an ace, while Boldog and Sean Nelson (East Hampton, Conn./Xavier) teamed up for a block assist for the last three points before Lewis won the match on a Princeton error.
 
Pat Schwagler led the Tigers with 10 kills and five digs.
 
Lewis returns to Romeoville to host Loyola on Wednesday (March 13) at 7 PM. Fans are encouraged to wear white on White Out Night at Neil Carey Arena.
