No 18 Lewis Baseball Takes Series From Kentucky Wesleyan; 10-5, 14-9

Five different Flyers had three or more hits in the second game against the Panthers.

Owensboro, Ky. – The No. 18 Lewis University baseball team won their second Great Lakes Valley Conference four-game weekend series of the season with a Sunday (April 14) 10-5, 14-9 sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan at Panther Park.
 
The Flyers improve to 22-5 on the season and a league-best 16-3 while the Panthers fall to 11-23 on the year and 5-17 against GLVC teams.
 
“Our bats were locked-in all weekend,” Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. “We did a great job of putting runs on the board throughout the game.”
 
In the first game, the Flyers' jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a lead-off single by sophomore Anthony Baldassano (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) and an error in the third inning. In the fifth inning, Lewis got doubles from sophomore Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) and junior Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) with the bases loaded to score five runs.
 
Kentucky Wesleyan tried to cut into Lewis' lead in the bottom of the sixth after the Flyers picked up a run in the top of the inning to go up 9-0. The Panthers put four runs on the board on four hits and one error. Both squads also picked up a single run in their half of the seventh.
 
Lewis starting pitcher senior Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./Triton) threw six innings, giving up four runs, one earned, on five hits. Schroeder (5-1) also struck out four.
 
KWC's Kaleb Moore (1-5) was credited with the loss, throwing 4.2 innings and giving up seven runs, four earned, on four hits. He walked five and struck out one.

The ball kept flying off Lewis' bats in the second game as the Flyers scored in all but two innings. Schroeder went 4-for-4 with a double and a home run, scored four runs and picked up two RBI.
 
Five different Flyers had three or more hits as junior Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North/Moraine Valley C.C.) hit a team-leading fifth home run of the season. Both Murray and Baldassano tallied three RBI in the victory.
 
“I thought our starters threw the ball well today,” McDonough said. “It was a hitter's day as the wind was blowing out on a warm day.”
 
Flyers' starter junior Kendall Paluch (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic/Pasco Hernando C.C.) pitched six innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits. Paluch (6-1) struck out three and walked one.
 
The Panthers' Andrew Moralez (2-2) went 2.1 innings and gave up six runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out one.
 
The Flyers head to Kenosha, Wis., for a Wednesday (April 17) GLVC doubleheader against UW-Parkside. First pitch is set for 12 PM.
