No. 10 Lewis Baseball Takes Two From Southern Indiana, 6-1; 3-2

The Flyers are a perfect 8-0 at Brennan Field this season.

Junior Ben Albano hit a solo home run and a two-RBI triple in the game two 3-2 victory.

Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 10 Lewis University baseball team extended their home winning streak to eight games with a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of Southern Indiana 6-1, 3-2 on Saturday (April 20) at Brennan Field.
 
The Flyers improve to 24-5 on the year and 18-3 in conference play while the Eagles fall to 22-15 on the season and 12-14 against GLVC teams.
 
“We played two good games today, game two especially was a nail bitter,” Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. “Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) came up with the big hit when we needed it. We are ecstatic to come away with two wins today.”

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Flyers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Junior Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) singled in senior Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) before sophomore Anthony Baldassano (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Derek Thomas (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy).
 
Lewis tacked on two more in the fifth when junior Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North/Moraine Valley C.C.) lasted a two-run home run to left field, scoring sophomore Kane Lombardo (Forest Park, Ill./Nazareth) (Forest Park, Ill./Nazareth). Buddle then doubled in sophomore Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) to go up 5-0 in the sixth inning.
 
Southern Indiana's Hamilton Carr doubled Dokey in to cut the Flyers lead to 5-1.
 
Senior Michael Schroeder (Crown Point, Ind./North Newton) (Crown Point, Ind./Triton) put the Flyers back up by five with a home run in the seventh inning.
 
Flyers' starting pitcher junior Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) threw seven innings allowing one run on six hits. Helwich (7-1) struck out five, walked two and hit one batter.
 
USI's Ben Wright (5-4) took the loss after throwing seven innings, allowing six runs on 12 hits. Wright struck out four, walked two and hit one batter. 

In the second game of the doubleheader, Albano put the Flyers on the board in the fourth inning sending a ball over the centerfield wall to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Eagles pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning capitalizing a walk and back-to-back Flyer errors that preceded a two-RBI single by A.J. Dokey.
 
Lewis answered in the bottom of the sixth when Albano hit a two-RBI triple, scoring Buddle and Murray to regain a 3-2 lead.
 
Lewis starting pitcher senior Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) (McLean, Ill./Olympia) threw six innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on one hit. Frahm (5-0) struck out and walked three.
 
The Eagles' David Toth (5-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings of work.
 
The Flyers and the Eagles will meet again at Brennan Field on Sunday (April 21) for two more GLVC contests. First pitch is set for 12 PM.
