Allendale, Mich. - Lewis junior
Chantel Stennis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) and sophomore
Amanda Farrough (South Bend, Ind./Clay) combined for three wins and three NCAA Provisional marks to lead the Flyer women's track and field team to a second-place finish at the season-opening GVSU Early Bird, hosted by Grand Valley State, at the Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday (Dec. 6) afternoon.
Grand Valley State won the team title with 146 points, followed by the Flyers (137).
Stennis won the 200-meter run with a career-best and NCAA provisional mark of 24.28 and ran a leg of the runner-up and NCAA provisional setting 4x400 relay (3:53.59) with sophomore Cortney Cross, senior
Amy Polhemus (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) and freshman Zoe Mead. Mead also took home second-place in the 600-meter run (1:36.57).
Farrough set a personal-best and NCAA provisional standard with a first-place showing in the 3,000-meter run (9:59.23), while teammate
Jaime Hershfang (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton Prep) was a runner-up with a time of 10:40.08. Farrough also took home the 1-mile run title with a time of 5:06.29.
"I thought it was a great start to the season," Lewis head women's track and field coach
Dana Schwarting said. "We looked solid in the field events, but the sprints and distance groups had a great start.
"We are in a great spot going into the break."
Flyer junior
Amber Cook (Grayslake, Ill./Warren Township) captured the triple jump title with a leap of 35'9 1/2" (10.91m), while sophomore
Phoenix Smallwood (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) finished second with a jump of 25'8 3/4" (10.89m).
Senior
Kayla Patterson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) took home the 1,000-meter title with a time of 3:21.82, while freshman Haley Renison placed second with a time of 3:32.88.
Lewis returns to action on December 12th, as the Flyer will participate in the Nebraska Kearney Pre-Holiday Invitational.
