Box Score
Winter Haven, Fla. – Lewis University sophomore Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) singled in senior Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) in the 10th inning to help the Flyer baseball team capture an 8-7 victory over Tiffin on Saturday (March 8).

The Flyers improve to 6-6 on the year while the Dragons fall to 1-7 on the season.

"Today's game was a good way to finish up the trip," Lewis baseball head coach Tim McDonough said. "In a back-and-forth game, Austin came up with the big hit through the left side of the infield to score Jake."

Lewis senior Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) got the Flyers offense jump started with a triple in the first inning to score senior Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) to take a 1-0 lead.

Tiffin was able to even the score in the top of the third but the Flyers regained the lead in their half of the inning. Albano picked up two more RBI with a single through the right side of the infield to score Buddle and sophomore Joel Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill./St. Laurence) to take a 3-1 advantage. Murray crossed the plate on a ground out by Mastela to move the Flyers lead to 4-1.

The Dragons took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs in the frame.

In the sixth inning, Lewis senior Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) sparked the Flyer rally with a leadoff base hit before scoring, along with Mastela, on a line drive by junior Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) to regain the lead. Later in the inning, Buddle reached base on a Tiffin miscue, which allowed Barajas to score and push the Flyers lead to 7-5 through six innings.

The Dragons picked up two runs in the seventh to tie the score at 7-all.

Freshman James Holub (Waconda, Ill./Wauconda) collected his first collegiate win after throwing 1.1 innings in relief. Holub (1-0) scattered two hits and struck out one.

Tiffin reliever Kyle Montell tossed 1.1 innings to take the loss. Montell (1-1) gave up one run on two hits and struck out one.

The Flyers open up the Great Lakes Valley Conference slate at Quincy on Saturday (March 15) with first pitch of the doubleheader coming at 12 PM.
