PDF Box ScoreROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 5 Lewis men's volleyball opened the 2015 home portion of their schedule on Wednesday (Jan. 14) evening with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-14 victory over Carthage in a non-conference match at Neil Carey Arena.
Lewis played 17 different players in the three-set victory. Senior
Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) led Lewis with seven kills and two aces in two sets. The Flyers had eight aces in the contest. Senior
Eric Butch (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) also added two aces. Seniors
Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) and
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) each added five kills. Sophomore
Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) and senior
James Hofmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop McNicholas) each pitched in four kills.
The Flyers led the entire match with the only tie of the contest coming at 1-1 in the first set.
Lewis out-hit Carthage .355 to .048.
"Our guys came in and some things we've been working on in practice the last couple days," Lewis head coach
Dan Friend said. "Carthage is a great Division III team and I think they gave us a battle at certain points but at the same time we were able to step on the gas and put them away. We also got to see all our guys in the lineup at different times."
Lewis improves to 3-1. Carthage falls to 0-1. The Flyers return to action on Friday (Jan. 16) vs. Harvard. First serve on "Ugly Sweater Night" at Neil Carey Arena is set for 7 p.m.
